In botany the term cultivar (formerly abbreviated as HP) means the classification system used to designate the different varieties obtained from a cultivated plant.
The term, which is a contraction of the words "cults (vated) var (iety)," in turn mold of Latin varietas worship, "was officially adopted at the XIII Congress of horticulture in London in 1952 in order to distinguish the varieties rather than those obtained from plants in the wild, where it continues to use the traditional classification.
Most of the cultivars derived from crosses made by farmers and the gardeners, who over the centuries have chosen the plants so as to enhance the characters, considered important, such as color, size of flowers, the productivity or resistance to disease.
The common hyacinth, for example, is mostly cultivated varieties that enhance the density of flowers, which resemble very little to the original wild species.
cultivars, often sterile, are commonly propagated vegetatively and some species of great economic value, such as apple and pink, there are many thousands.
